Julianna Fletcher is a young woman who has grown up in India in the latter half of the 19th Century.

After her father arranges her marriage by proxy to a man she has never met, Julianna finds herself in an isolated English manor surrounded by a hostile housekeeper, an alcoholic sister-in-law who is apparently in love with her own brother, and a pseudo husband who has but one goal in mind: producing a son to ensure the family fortune does not go to the Catholic church.

Julianna must discover her real foe, free her real husband, and save herself and her daughter when the birth of the baby endangers them all.
